LUBEN BOYKOV Art - Light Born out of Darkness

LUBEN BOYKOV, Sculptor, St. John's, NL

Living and working in Canada since 1990, Luben Boykov has reaped multiple awards for his work combining traditional bronze casting techniques with inspiration from the Newfoundland landscape.

Our video shows a series of bronze sculptures cast directly on straw. Some are bodies and heads with tormented expressions, others mythic animals and totems with a raw, tribal quality.

Currently Luben is working on a new series of sculptures cast on human bodies, his daughter being among them, covered with fancy fabrics, exotic butterflies and golden leaves, and other organic elements, hanging from the ceiling like flying ghosts.

Luben’s black and white paintings were done by spray-painting around straw. After removing the straw, the finished product is a black background with a mysterious texture, resembling x-rays of DNA or telescopic images.

Downtown in St-John’s, in the historic site, Harbourside Park, stand two statues by Luben representing the world famous native Newfoundland dogs.
