Unity 1918
By Kevin Kerr
Staged: Peter Batakliev

Kevin Kerr's Unity 1918 is powerfully resonant for the society we're living in right now. The main character Beatrice, a young devoted woman provides continuity and reflection by reading aloud her diary of the fall of 1918, when the influenza pandemic arrived and, coincidentally, the First World War. The play is staged in fragmented scenes, and dreamy sequences as a kind of montage of the life of the isolated town out on the Saskatchewan prairie.

Batakliev gives us a compelling, engaging and powerful theatre, making us think about issues like how people help each other - or don't - in times of such horrible stress.
